The NBA is narrowing the range of bets its sportsbook partners can offer after investigations raised concerns about wagers tied to individual players. Restrictions outlined on October 16, 2026, cover specific statistical unders, opening-tip outcomes and other plays that the league considers particularly vulnerable to manipulation. The move targets particular vulnerabilities rather than eliminating player props altogether.
Which Bets Are Being Restricted?
A player prop concerns something a player does during a game, such as scoring points or collecting rebounds. An "under" wins when that player finishes below a stated figure. The targeted wagers combine several such outcomes or depend on a brief moment. The October 16 measures target these markets at NBA partner sportsbooks: Restricted marketWhat it involvesSame-player under parlaysCombining bets that one player falls below multiple statistical lines.Low-minute player undersBetting below a statistical line for a player expected to play fewer than 12 minutes.Opening-tip and first-event betsPredicting the tip winner or the first player to achieve a specified action.Specific missed shotsBetting that a player will miss a particular attempt.High-payout alternate undersUsing unusually low statistical targets with larger potential returns. Those categories build on earlier limits involving players on short-term contracts and certain tightly defined game events.
Why Small Outcomes Create Big Concerns
A final score reflects contributions from entire teams. A wager on one player's minutes, by contrast, can be affected by a substitution or an early exit. In the wrong circumstances, someone with inside information could have an advantage that ordinary fans lack. Sportsbook apps offer a wide range of NBA betting markets, from game winners and point spreads to individual player props. SportsLine compares leading platforms for online sports betting, including their available markets, odds and features. However, not every type of wager carries the same integrity concerns, which helps explain why the NBA is restricting certain player props while leaving broader game markets available.Parlays involving multiple unders on one player are especially sensitive. If that player leaves unexpectedly, several parts of the wager can move in the same direction at once. Restricting those combinations reduces one potential incentive for misconduct, although it can't remove the risk of insider information entirely.
How Earlier Cases Shaped the Response
Former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter received a lifetime NBA ban in April 2024 after the league found he had disclosed confidential information to bettors and wagered on NBA games. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and admitted leaving games early as part of a betting scheme. Terry Rozier's case has also drawn attention to bets on players' statistical unders. Prosecutors have alleged that advance information about his playing time was used in a betting scheme connected to a March 2023 game. Rozier has pleaded not guilty, and those allegations shouldn't be treated as established facts. Careful distinctions matter in other investigations, too. The federal gambling investigation involving Malik Beasley offers another reason to distinguish suspicion from evidence. In August 2025, his attorneys said he was no longer a target and hadn't been charged. Unusual betting patterns alone don't prove that a player did anything wrong.
What Basketball Fans Can Expect
The restrictions apply to sportsbooks operating under agreements with the NBA. They aren't a universal prohibition covering every possible betting platform, and ordinary game-result wagers aren't the focus of the policy. They also follow earlier changes rather than replacing them. Back in 2024, the Associated Press reported on restrictions involving players on two-way and 10-day contracts, including BetMGM's decision to stop taking certain under bets. For fans, the practical change is a smaller selection of highly specific player markets at participating sportsbooks. The concern centers on outcomes a participant could influence through a narrow action.
The Work Beyond Removing Bets
The NBA has also described plans to strengthen betting education, monitor unusual wagering activity and address harassment linked to gambling. Those efforts matter because suspicious transactions can still arise in markets that remain available. Monitoring may identify unusual patterns, but deciding what they mean requires investigation. Injuries, coaching decisions and unexpectedly short appearances can all affect a player's statistics without implying misconduct. Protecting fair competition depends on separating legitimate game events from evidence of manipulation.
A Narrower Market, Not a Blanket Ban
The October 16 restrictions reflect a targeted response to vulnerabilities exposed by earlier cases. Removing easily influenced wagers can reduce opportunities for abuse, while scrutiny of suspicious activity and careful treatment of allegations remain essential to protecting trust in NBA games.
