For adult and returning learners, revision has to compete with everything else demanding their time
A learner who uploads a final draft to a learning management system and never opens the file again has completed the assignment, not the writing process. That distinction matters in any writing course, but it can be especially important for adult and returning learners who may be fitting coursework around employment, family responsibilities, and other commitments. The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics has described nontraditional undergraduates as a broad and heterogeneous population, noting characteristics such as delayed enrollment, part-time attendance, financial independence, full-time employment, and family responsibilities. In other words, adult learners cannot be defined neatly by a single age cutoff, and course design has to account for very different demands on learners' time.Composition instructors have long emphasized that strong writing develops through drafting, feedback, and revision rather than through a single act of submission. Digital learning environments make that process easier to observe. Submission logs, timestamps, peer-review records, and version histories can reveal whether meaningful rewriting actually took place between an early draft and the final version.

Points can reward the process, not just the final product
The simplest game mechanic to introduce is a point system that rewards stages of the writing process rather than assigning nearly all available credit to the finished essay.Instead of awarding fifty points to a final paper, an instructor might distribute those points across outlining, peer commenting, a first draft, a revision plan, a revision memo, and the final submission. This approach can be particularly useful in adult-learning environments because it breaks a large assignment into smaller, visible milestones. Learners can see that progress is accumulating before the final deadline rather than treating the assignment as an all-or-nothing task. The point values still need to reflect the actual work required. If a five-minute skim receives the same credit as a detailed peer review or substantial revision, the scoring system teaches learners that completing the requirement matters more than engaging with the writing.A useful point system therefore rewards evidence of process, not simply evidence that a box was checked.
Progression systems reward staying in the draft longer
Progression systems create a sense of moving through stages or unlocking the next step. Writing already has a natural progression: prewriting, drafting, reviewing, revising, editing, and publishing.A digital writing assignment can make those stages explicit. For example, a learner might need to complete a peer review before opening the revision-planning activity, or submit a revision memo before the final submission portal becomes available. For returning learners who may not have participated in formal academic writing for several years, these checkpoints can also make the expectations of the writing process more transparent. Rather than assuming that every learner already knows when and how to revise, the course design makes the sequence visible. The important feature is not calling one stage “Level Two” or another “Level Three.” The useful part of progression design is that it creates a structured path through work that might otherwise be postponed until the final deadline.
Leaderboards borrow a comparison format adult learners already recognize
Leaderboards work because they use a visual language that is already familiar across digital environments: the ranked comparison table.Adults encounter this format whenever they compare options online. Travel sites sort hotels according to price and rating, while comparison websites organize competing offers according to common criteria. The same logic can be seen on pages such as casino depot 10 euros, where different online casino offers are presented around a shared comparison criterion.Seen this way, a classroom leaderboard is not necessarily an unfamiliar game device. It is a familiar information architecture applied to measures such as completed peer reviews, revision milestones, or participation in writing workshops. That distinction matters. A well-designed leaderboard can communicate progress. A poorly designed one can become a public display of who is ahead and who is falling behind. For adult learners in particular, public ranking may also introduce unnecessary pressure into an environment where participants arrive with very different amounts of available time, writing experience, and familiarity with academic conventions. One alternative is to rank activities rather than people. A course might display the percentage of the class that has completed a revision checkpoint or show collective progress toward a peer-review target without identifying individual learners.
Challenges give peer review a clear beginning and end
A “challenge” mechanic can make peer review more concrete.Instead of telling learners simply to “give feedback,” an instructor might define a review challenge: read two drafts, identify three places where the argument could be clearer, comment on one organizational issue, and identify one sentence that could be shortened or removed. The advantage is not primarily the game terminology. The advantage is that the task has a visible completion state.Open-ended instructions often produce open-ended results. When the criteria are specific, learners know what kind of reading and response the instructor expects.Challenges can also become more demanding over time. An early writing task might focus entirely on argument structure and organization. A later challenge might ask learners to examine transitions, evidence, paragraph cohesion, or sentence-level editing. This creates progression without requiring every assignment to become a competition.
Gamification should reduce friction, not add another system to learn
Game mechanics can be engaging, but adult learners are not automatically looking for a course to feel like a game. For learners already balancing education with work or family commitments, clarity and visible progress may be more valuable than elaborate game terminology. The mechanics work best when they simplify the writing process rather than becoming another system learners have to understand.A point should tell the learner what matters.A checkpoint should clarify what comes next.A challenge should define what successful participation looks like.If badges, levels, currencies, and scoring rules require lengthy explanations, the mechanics may begin competing with the writing assignment itself. This is an important distinction between using game design to clarify a process and attempting to turn an entire course into a game.
The evidence on rewards and motivation is not settled
Points, badges, and leaderboards do not automatically improve learning, and research on gamification is not uniformly favorable. In a longitudinal study published in Computers & Education, Michael D. Hanus and Jesse Fox compared students in a gamified course using elements such as badges and a leaderboard with students taking a non-gamified version of the course. Across a 16-week semester, the students in the gamified course showed lower motivation, satisfaction, and empowerment over time, and the researchers found a relationship between reduced intrinsic motivation and lower final-exam performance. That finding does not mean that every game mechanic should be removed from education. It does show why the mechanic being rewarded matters. The tension is particularly visible in writing instruction. Cripps reflects on introducing experience points, levels, badges, and other game mechanics into a basic writing course. His experience was mixed: some learners enjoyed the system, while others regarded it as unnecessary, and the mechanics did not automatically produce the changes in attendance and homework completion he had hoped for.The practical lesson is not simply “gamification works” or “gamification fails.” It is to keep the reward attached to the writing behavior the instructor actually wants to encourage.Points for completing a substantive revision step are connected to the writing process.A level unlocked after producing a revision plan is connected to the writing process.A leaderboard based only on raw word count or speed may not be.The design question is therefore not whether a course is gamified. The more useful question is what behavior each mechanic rewards.
Where to read the broader theory before building an assignment
Composition-specific experiences are useful when designing writing assignments, but instructors considering gamification across an entire online course may also benefit from the broader literature on game-based learning and instructional design. The Pressbooks chapter “Gamification and Game Based Learning in Online Education” provides a wider overview of the subject, including the distinction between gamification and game-based learning, relevant learning theories, and approaches to applying game elements in online education. That distinction matters.Adding checkpoints, points, or structured challenges to a writing course does not require transforming the entire class into a game. For an adult-learning environment, a small number of clearly purposeful mechanics may be more useful than a complex system of scores and rewards.
Build the mechanic around revision, not around the score
The most useful game-design mechanics in writing instruction share one characteristic: they make an important part of the writing process easier to see and easier to complete.A point can make a revision step count.A checkpoint can prevent a final submission from bypassing peer review.A challenge can turn vague feedback instructions into a specific task.A progression system can show a returning learner what comes next.None of these mechanics improves writing simply because it resembles a game. Their value comes from directing attention toward work that already matters: rereading, reconsidering, responding to feedback, restructuring ideas, editing sentences, and producing a stronger draft. For adult and returning learners, that may be the most useful form of gamification: not making writing feel like a game, but making progress through the writing process easier to recognize.
