When your pet has a sudden health issue after normal clinic hours, knowing what to expect from an urgent veterinary visit can ease a stressful situation. After-hours animal hospitals play a vital role, addressing problems that can’t wait until the next day but may not rise to the level of a life-threatening emergency. UrgentVet is here for after-hours veterinary urgent care for pets, because your pet can’t wait to feel better ®, offering a practical solution for families who need urgent help at night, on weekends, or during holidays. It provides an alternative to a 24/7 emergency facility and is not open 24/7, but is available late nights, after hours, weekends, and holidays, 365 days a year, helping bridge the gap when regular clinics are closed.1
How after-hours care works
After-hours veterinary clinics operate during times when most regular vet offices are closed. Pet owners typically bring in dogs or cats for urgent problems such as sudden limping, ear infections, minor wounds, allergic reactions, or vomiting and diarrhea. While some situations are true emergencies, many are urgent but not immediately life-threatening, which distinguishes these hospitals from 24/7 ERs.
Preparing before you leave home
Before heading out, gather crucial information such as your pet’s symptoms, when they started, and any recent changes in behavior. Bring a list of current medications and any relevant medical records if possible. For dogs, use a secure leash or harness. For cats, place them in a sturdy carrier with a towel or blanket to help them feel secure during transport.

Assessment, diagnostics, and treatment
Veterinary teams will ask about your pet’s history and current symptoms before conducting a physical exam and checking vital signs. Depending on the case, they may recommend diagnostic tests such as bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, or fecal and urine tests. Some tests may be done immediately to guide treatment, while others might be deferred if the condition is stable.

Understanding costs, discharge, and reducing stress
Staff will present treatment options and cost estimates before initiating major procedures. You may need to provide authorization for services, sometimes quickly. At discharge, expect instructions on home care, medication, and signs to monitor. You’ll also be advised to follow up with your primary veterinarian as appropriate.
