Planning a kitchen renovation in West Chester?

Before you choose an island, cabinets, or countertops, there’s something more important to understand — the house itself.

West Chester homes tend to fall into three common kitchen layouts.

First, the narrow galley kitchen found in older downtown rowhomes and twins. These spaces are tight, so trying to force in an island or a large L-shaped layout can actually make the kitchen less functional. A properly designed galley layout often makes better use of the space.

Second, the colonial with a rear addition. Here, the biggest challenge may not be the cabinets at all. It’s the connection between the original house and the addition. A wall may be load-bearing, the floors may sit at different levels, and opening the space could require a structural beam.

And third, the 1990s development home with a U-shaped kitchen and peninsula. These kitchens are often functional, but dated. Instead of completely rebuilding the layout, a partial peninsula opening, updated cabinets, better lighting, and removing the soffit may be enough to transform the space.
