About

I’m Dr. Woestman - a superintendent for the Belvidere School District in northern Illinois. I’m leading a group of amazing staff on a journey to rethink the way we do school, aligned to research on learning and student motivation. Our model has a student-centered learning focus, and includes a term we call proficiency-based grading - which we lovingly refer to as PBG. Some people call proficiency-based practices “Mastery” or “Competency.” Whatever you call it, it’s based on the idea that students should be able to move ahead based on their ability to demonstrate that they’ve actually learned the material, and works best if teachers can give students feedback on and provide support for specific skills. Join us for conversations about how proficiency-based learning practices are impacting our learning environments.
