Non-Spoiler Hints: How to Think Through Today's Categories
When you find yourself stuck, running through a mental diagnostic checklist is more effective than making random guesses: connections hint
- Watch Out for Decoy Themes: The puzzle creator purposefully places words that seem to share a blatant connection (for instance, five or six animals, or multiple sports terms). If you immediately spot five items that belong to the same category, pause. Identify which ones belong elsewhere before committing a turn.
- Shift Parts of Speech: English words often double as nouns and verbs, or adjectives and adverbs. If a word like PARK, SEAL, or TRAIN is stalling your progress, mentally flip its grammatical role.
- Scan for Compound Word Fragments: Look for words that frequently precede or follow another specific word. For example, SAW, SKATE, SURF, and CHALK all pair with the suffix word BOARD.
- Listen to the Sounds: Say the words out loud. Some of the most notorious Purple categories involve auditory patterns like homophones (words that sound the same as letters or numbers) or silent consonants.
