What Does the Bible Say About Regret and Irreversible Choices?
Regret can feel heavier than ordinary guilt. Guilt recognizes that a wrong was done. Regret adds the painful awareness that the past cannot be changed: the words cannot be taken back, the years cannot be recovered, and certain consequences may remain.
The Bible does not minimize this pain or offer false reassurance that every loss can be reversed. Instead, Scripture distinguishes between regret that leads to despair and sorrow that leads to repentance, forgiveness, restoration, and purpose. Its central answer is not that God erases the past, but that God can redeem what cannot be undone.
