The coronavirus has spread quickly since it was first discovered in China a few weeks ago. But what has spread just as quickly is the rampant misinformation surrounding the illness. Between plague memes and quarantine border shutdowns, people are getting a little anxious about all of the facts (or pseudofacts) going around about this deadly illness. So how much do we actually know about the coronavirus? We know that the coronavirus is a fast-spreading virus similar to SARS and common influenza that was first identified in China and has since spread to several other countries. This respiratory virus is spread through person-to-person contact, primarily via respiratory excretions (coughing and sneezing) and, similar to influenza, has the potential for deadly complications in children, the elderly, and immune-suppressed populations. It’s easy to be more afraid of coronavirus than is warranted if you are only catching the buzzwords surrounding it along with accompanying paranoia and speculation. The truth is a lot less exciting. Unless you’re living in the Chinese quarantine zones, you’re currently a lot more likely to be killed by the common flu than you are by the coronavirus, but long-term predictions for the epidemic aren’t good.
