Spanning the years from the 1950s to the early 2000s, the narrative follows Elwood Curtis as he transitions from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. The bond between young Elwood and his grandmother, portrayed exceptionally by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, evokes a strong sense of empathy from the audience as he navigates life in the South during the Civil Rights Movement. Although he excels academically and contemplates attending college, Elwood's journey takes a turn when he finds himself in an unfortunate situation, leading to his placement at Nickel Academy.
