Set in 1838 in Germany, Thomas Hutter is sent to Transylvania by his boss to meet with Count Orlok, a new client who shows interest in buying the house across the street from Hutter's home in the made-up town of Wisborg. Hutter is initially alarmed when he notices that the residents of the inn are visibly afraid of Orlok. His uneasiness intensifies upon arriving at the castle, where Orlok demonstrates an extraordinary obsession with Hutter's bleeding thumb, which was hurt accidently. After spending the night at the castle, Hutter wakes up to find puncture wounds on his neck. Orlok also brings up a portrait of Hutter's wife, which reveals an uncomfortable interest in her.
