Blitz presents a compelling contrast to the prevailing sense of nostalgia. While it is true that a sense of community may have existed, it was not characterized by unconditional acceptance. This is evident in the actions of the white couple who attempt to create a segregated space in the air raid shelter using sheets secured with clothes pegs, as well as in the cruel dismissal of Black volunteers who are trying to assist them. Furthermore, the perpetuation of racism from one generation to the next is starkly illustrated. This raises questions about the narrative of the Allies. For viewers who have been educated about the titular attacks, the film engages directly with the sanitized accounts of hope and unity that have been passed down through oral tradition and have found their way into cinema and educational settings.
