Despite her living conditions and mental state in the aftermath, Watts' life as a writer in New York City is drastically altered by the unexpected death of her best friend Murray, whose pet Great Dane is entrusted to her care. Filmmakers David Siegel and Scott McGhee, who co-direct and adapt the novel by Sigrid Nunez, genuinely understand what it means to grieve and re-embrace life despite it. While Watts handles all the heavy lifting with astonishing skill, the true star is Bing, the wonderful dog, who uncannily portrays an animal grieving the loss of their person with their own melancholy and seeking another connection.
