Continuing our study of Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians, we come in chapter seven to the Apostle’s discussion of the freedom available in Christ from the burdens of breaking the law as we “serve in the new way of the Spirit & not in the old way of the written [law] code” (v. 6). That very Spirit bears witness that all in Christ are children of God & “fellow heirs with Christ” of all the treasures of the Father’s will (Rom 8:16-17). Through Jesus’ death & resurrection, we’re liberated from the lethal “letter of the law,” even while the legacy of the law provides us lessons as we face the inner struggle of a renewed spirit living within the still fallible form of our flesh.
