There’s no question that the theme of loss has permeated throughout Tanya’s life: the loss of innocence, the loss of ideal family relationships, the loss of health… And while that shone through in our conversation, what stood out MOST is her unbelievable resilience and tenacity. Tanya talks about the confusion and loneliness of being a child witnessing domestic violence, and exposits the questions that children can ask themselves: Am I somehow responsible? Am I doing enough? These questions have lingered for some time, however, when her daughter was diagnosed with a rare health condition, she was forced to confront them in a new context. Tanya describes how she learned to not blame herself for things that are out of her control, and that accepting the problem is not the same as being OK with it.Tanya runs a successful private practice in Kitchener, Ontario, and has over 20 years of experience in the mental health field.
