Story of Sage Rishyashringa
Religion & Spirituality
Learn about Rishi Rishyashringa in this episode of Sages and Sants of Bharat, brought to you by gaathastory. In this episode, we narrate the legend of Rishyashringa, the sage with a horn, born of the sage Vibhandak and a celestial deer who was once an Apsara. Raised in a hermitage deep in the forest, away from all human habitation, the young sage knew nothing of the world — until the drought-stricken kingdom of Anga sent its courtesans to bring him to their land, for the rains would fall only when the foremost among celibates conducted a yajna there. Disguised as a religious student, the chief courtesan's daughter charmed the innocent sage and brought him to King Romapada, where Indra's withheld rains finally fell. A tale of innocence, desire and a father's anger that turned into a blessing, narrated here by King Dasharath's charioteer, Sumantra.
