Miscellaneous
It's a topic that's been on the minds of fans and officials in footy – and sports more widely – for decades, but only in recent years has become front-page news. Joining Sarah, Amy and Brodie to discuss concussion complexities is Stephanie Convery, who as well as being Deputy Culture Editor at the Guardian Australia, is the author of the forthcoming book, Who Killed Davey Browne? Following the inquest into the avoidable death of 29-year-old Australian professional boxer Davey Browne, Steph's book will be published by Penguin Random House in March 2020. Our chat covers footy (obvi) and why boxers – like Steph herself – keep chasing the adrenalin of the sport, despite the risks. We also ask what is concussion, how does it manifest, how do we identify it, and what are the long-term repercussions of head injuries, like concussion?Read the pieces discussed in this episode, and related to our chat:Stephanie's story on Davey from 2017The case of 17-year-old Canadian rugby player Rowan Stringer, and the law that her concussion-related death influencedWendy Carlisle on the AFL's concussion problemSt Kilda's Paddy McCartin opens up about the affects of multiple concussionsAnnie Nolan writes about her children's responses to their dad, Liam Picken's, on-field concussionsFOTD (Friend of the Pod) Konrad Marshall on the concussion class actionOur artwork was designed by Steph Hughes, and our theme song is 'Here if You Need' by Wet Lips.Get in touch with us:Twitter @fangrrrlspodInstagram @fangrrrlspodFacebook @ fangrrrlsEmail fangrrrlspodcast@gmail.com
