Spiritual Sleep in the Bible: Signs, Causes, and How to Wake Up

Spiritual sleep is a biblical picture of a believer who is still spiritually alive but no longer alert, responsive, or attentive to God. It is not necessarily open rebellion, public failure, or a decision to abandon faith. More often, it is a slow loss of sensitivity that happens so gradually that a person may not recognize it for years.

This is why Jesus repeatedly told His followers to stay awake, watch, and remain ready. The warning appears throughout the New Testament because spiritual drowsiness is a common problem. It is a persistent danger for anyone whose faith becomes passive, distracted, familiar, exhausted, or compromised.

Understanding spiritual sleep matters because the condition often feels normal from the inside. A person can attend church, read Scripture occasionally, serve others, and still lose the alertness, repentance, prayerfulness, and expectancy that mark a living walk with God.
