When I think of my friend Katrina Doran, so many words come to mind. Air, creativity, compassion, gentleness, beauty, playfulness…all those qualities that represent magnificence. Katrina and I have known each other for a bit and every time I interact with her I feel like I’ve seen loveliness and been infused with a reminder to pause and receive what is present. She describes herself as a breaker and a maker of things. Putting the pieces of something broken together into a stunning mosaic. This parallels to leadership in so many ways. We lead and love people who are messy, wounded and brilliant all at the same time. By being present to people we can be given a gift. The gift of compassion, understanding and what or where to turn to next. Just as Katrina is guided into her creations by getting quiet and becoming present, we too can be shown how to help develop people and where to step next as a leader. Not only are Katrina’s thoughts helpful to lead people, but also to build our own self-awareness. Taking the wounded, broken pieces of our own lives and creating something beautiful so we can shine our own lights in the world. Leadership takes creativity in how we become aware of our own selves and to guide and model too others. Katrina Doran’s favored vehicle of self-expression is through the medium of mosaic. She has studied worldwide with masters of this fine craft and combines traditional knowledge and respect with her own uncanny eye for detail and an intuitive sense of design in order to produce works of art with lasting beauty. Doran creates custom designs for her clients needs and teaches classes and workshops. She specializes in the art of breaking things up through a guided process that brings about insight and awareness. Her enthusiasm and passion for this art form are contagious.
