THE CONVOHello lovely people. Today's episode features scholar, educator, and youth advocate, Bianca J. Baldridge. A sociologist of education, youth, and race, Bianca explores educational policy through her role as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Bianca’s research critiques and productively explores socio-political contexts of community-based youth work and afterschool education. Bianca’s work recently translated into an incredible book—which you should all read— titled, Reclaiming Community: Race and the Uncertain Future of Youth Work. On this episode we talk about after school overall and how schooling shifts in this time of COVID-19. We also discuss the importance of proximity and hear a bit about Bianca's experience with schooling and education growing up. As somebody who recently considers themselves a youth worker, I am incredibly drawn to the work Bianca does to challenge conventional narratives operating under a framework of deficit-based learning, finding ways to teach and encourage people to seek out the various assets present in every single community.
