It’s another big weekend for high school football this week and all the action kicks off Thursday evening when the GHSA 4A Troup Tigers (1-0) journey to Kinnett Stadium in Columbus to take on the CHA Blue Devils.Coach Tanner Glisson’s Tigers are coming off a 59-24 pounding of the Ridgeland Panthers last week and look to make it two straight impressive wins.If Troup can defeat Columbus, it will set the stage for a showdown next week at Callaway Stadium against 5A unbeaten and rival Harris Co. (2-0). Coach Jamie Fox’ team took down G.W. Carver of Columbus 28-26 to open the season and won a wild 48-37 shootout over Westside-Macon last week.There’s a number of big matchups Friday as well.The 2-0 Beulah Bobcats are on the road at 1-1 Montgomery Academy in a big region contest. In two contests to date, Beulah has outscored its foes 70-6. The Bobcats defense has been outstanding and Friday’s outcome against the Eagles may hinge on another strong effort. Beulah’s rushing attack led by Chris Person has been key for ball-control, time-consuming drives in the pair of victories.Bobcat fans fondly remember last year’s stunning 27-26 win over the MA Eagles at Bobcat Stadium. Beulah’s thrilling win snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Eagles, which lead the all-time series with the Bobcats by a commanding 16-3 margin.With what’s at stake for first-year Beulah coach Matt Johnson, the Beulah-MA game is the local game of the week.In other games Friday, the unbeaten and AISA No. 3-ranked 1A Chambers Rebels (2-0) host the rival Abbeville Christian Academy Generals at Torbert Field.The CA-ACA rivalry is one of the Rebels most intense through the years and the 24-game rivalry is all tied at 12 wins apiece.Coach Jason Allen’s Rebels are fresh off a thrilling, come-from-behind 35-28 win over 3A Tuscaloosa Academy last week. The CA-ACA game is the third of four straight home games to open the season for what is another powerhouse Rebels outfit. CA has picked up impressive wins over 3A foes in its first two contests, including Lee-Scott in the opener in a 36-7 win.CA has won the last four games in a row against ACA but before that, the Generals won five straight but CA has firmly taken control of the series from 2016 on.In other matchups Friday, the Valley Rams (0-2) at rival Beauregard, AHSAA 1A No. 4 Lanett (2-0) is at the Wadley Bulldogs, LaFayette (0-1) hosts Vincent, GHSA 5A Harris Co. (2-0) hosts Upson-Lee and LaGrange (1-0) will battle Troup Co. rival Callaway (0-1) at Callaway Stadium with bragging rights on the line and Springwood (2-0) will try to continue their winning ways as the Wildcats visit Lowndes Academy.
