In this interview, our Managing Editor, Nicole Drakopoulos, sat down and spoke with Shabaka Hutchings about some of the core themes in our magazine Plastic / Artificial. During the summer of 2020, the conversation first began over email, a steady back and forth between her and Hutchings, before both they agreed to move the dialogue to a different forum. At the time Shabaka was in London, and Nicole was at home in Greece. It was early in the morning for Hutchings, 8AM, and as he drank a thick green smoothie. He mentioned that he had already been awake for 2-3 hours, practicing his saxophone, and preparing for an upcoming performance in Italy he had the next day. It was the first in-person gig he would be playing since the onset of COVID-19, six months prior. He spoke with deep thought, but with an infectious energy that carried between the screens; weaving insights of musicianship, craft and industry, with threads of philosophy and personal experience throughout the duration of our conversation. This interview is featured in our Magazine Plastic / Artificial amidst a wide, diverse array of powerful visual and literary content on the topic.
