As a Salvation Army church, we are part of a global movement fighting against the injustice and evil of slavery and human trafficking. Our International Headquarters is rallying the worldwide Army to action through its Fight for Freedom strategy and our own territory is raising awareness through its #WeAreNotForSale campaign. We all have a role to play and there are plenty of resources out there to equip and empower us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. But even as we seek to support those who are tricked and trapped by slavery, we realise that we too are in need of saving. We don’t have to look far to find greed and suffering. As we move through Exodus in the current teaching series, it’s appropriate that we explore Passover today – the liberation of the Israelites from the oppression of the Egyptians. This dramatic rescue, and its ultimate fulfilment in the death and resurrection of Jesus, confirm our identity as children of God: forgiven people, free from the judgement of sin and commissioned with a divine purpose to help others find welcome in God’s family.
