As Jesus rode victoriously into the city the throngs of people as described in Matt.21:8-9 spread their garment on the road and cut down palm branches spreading them too in his path symbolizing the respect and the submission to his authority. The palm leaves also represent salvation and joy. As Jesus rode along the path, several hundred thousand people took up a chant "Hosanna" to the Son of David, blessed is He that comes in the name of the LORD. Hosanna in Hebrew is an exclammatory that means "Save now!". They knew he was a King but didn't understand the nature of His kingship.
