Orange Shirt Day and the PPC

This week is Truth and Reconciliation Week in Canada, topped up with September 30 as a new national holiday known informally as Orange Shirt Day. The holiday is meant to provide focus on the issues and concerns of the indigenous populations, including the dozens of reserves where clean drinking water is still not available along with the missing and murdered indigenous woman and girls and of course the continued impact of residential schools. The holiday is however, not recognized provincially in 5 of 13 provinces and territories here, and I decide to make the case why it should be a provincial holiday as well around the entire nation. This past week has also seen a rise online in division between peoples Party of Canada voters, who supported Maxime Bernier, and the rest of the population. Things have gone so far as viral memes saying to "delete me from Facebook if you voted for the PPC". As you may guess, to me as someone who is vehemently supportive of open and respectful debate and discussion, this change in the mentality of our fellow citizens is very concerning. I decided to take some time this week to plea to your better judgement and ask that things be calmed down a bit. What makes people so angry with supporters of an oppositional political stance? and how can we bring everyone back together, without conflict?
