The September 4th state elections in Germany's North-eastern most state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg_Western Pomerania) brought what many perceived as a political upset when the Alternative for Germany (AfD) became the second biggest group in parliament, beating Angela Merkel's Christian Conservatives into third place.
