What if consciousness is not created by neurons alone?

What if the fluid flowing through your brain is doing something far more profound than simply protecting brain tissue and clearing waste?

Two young medical researchers, Shalin Bhatt and Richa Kulkarni at Georgetown University, have proposed a provocative new framework that could challenge how we think about brain rhythms, consciousness, the glymphatic system and the relationship between neurons, blood vessels and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Their GlymphoVasomotor Field (GVF) Theory, published in Medical Hypotheses in 2025, proposes that vascular dynamics, glymphatic fluid movement and electromagnetic interactions may provide a non-neuronal scaffolding for brain rhythms and consciousness.

And if future experiments validate the theory, the implications could be enormous.

THE MISSING PIECE MAY BE THE BRAIN'S FLUID DYNAMICS

Cerebrospinal fluid is not simply a protective cushion.

It moves through spaces surrounding the brain's blood vessels and is closely connected to the glymphatic system, which plays an important role in fluid movement and waste clearance.

The GVF hypothesis proposes a fascinating chain:

VASCULAR RHYTHMS → GLYMPHATIC FLOW → CSF MOVEMENT → IONIC CURRENTS → ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS → NEURAL COORDINATION

The theory suggests that moving, ion-containing CSF within perivascular spaces could generate structured electromagnetic fields capable of influencing neuronal activity and synchronization.
