Most Americans can no longer deduct moving expenses on their federal tax return. Before the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, eligible moving expenses were regarded as an above-the-line deduction to lower a person's taxable income, you may claim the standard deduction while still recouping the costs of moving for employment or hunting for a new job; you were not required to itemize your deductions on your federal tax return.
