s5e3 Mark 1:9-13The baptism and temptation of Jesus...major events and wow does Mark fly through them! SOMAScripture - Read and Re-read Mark 1:9-13 (read a section or 2 after this reading as well to understand context a little bit)Observations/Questions - Here are some of our observations and questions we had concerning this text:Was it Jesus' signal when John was arrested that Jesus would really start His ministry or were they just both following the Holy Spirit? Why is Mark so brief with some major events in the life of Jesus? The dove? Like a dove? Luke uses it differently...so is it a metaphor?Mark loves the word, immediately...why does he use it so often?Mark is the only one that uses "wild beasts" in the wilderness - any significance? Is there any significance to why Mark doesn't tell us anything about the outcome of the temptation event?Meaning - major takeaways we have gained from this text (not exclusive - just our notes)Mark really wants us to know that Jesus is the Lord, better than John the Baptist, proclaimed by God himself and Victor over SatanThere does seem to be a hook involved in this...Mark wants us to listen as the story is going to get better! Application - what does this text mean FOR me not necessarily TO meWalk closer to Jesus - Jesus is God on earth, He is Victor and Overcomer and deserves our worshipModeling Jesus - baptism needs to mean something to us because of Jesus' example, overcoming temptation needs to mean something to usUplift Jesus - He is God, to be worshipped and reveredGroup Questions:Why do you think Jesus allowed himself to be baptized? Why do you think Jesus allowed himself to be tempted directly from Satan? Why do these 2 events seem appropriate at the beginning of Jesus' official ministry? What can we apply specifically to our own lives from Jesus' example in these things?
