Mark C. Brown has long been a student of enlightenment. And although he has now written a definitive book on the subject, he says that when it comes to living in an enlightened way, there is always room to grow. Unlike his previous book on personal growth, Dr. Brown’s latest book, Live Like a Window, Work Like a Mirror: Enlightenment and the Practice of Eternity Consciousness, was not born from his years as a psychologist or from personal experience. “It just came to me, one of those fortuitous, life-enhancing insights we occasionally receive that I am more than happy to share.” Of the title, he explains that living like a window means developing your ability to let go of even the most troubling thoughts, so that anything that comes into your mind passes easily out rather than intruding on your serenity. “An open window is simply a space through which anything can flow. This book shows you how to make that happen.” He further explains that, where living like a window represents the “inner work” of enlightenment, working like a mirror is its external expression. “As a mirror you reflect everyone just as they are in the exact fashion that a mirror would. Such a practice protects others’ autonomy by keeping such things as your personal needs, desires and other projections from intruding in the relationship.” Dr. Brown practices psychology and teaches meditation using EEG biofeedback, a method of biofeedback that records the brain’s electrical activity through sensors placed on the scalp and sends information to the brain to help it learn much more quickly. This exploits the brain’s natural inclination to work in a more efficient manner when provided feedback about its operation, and is a highly effective therapy for stress-related problems as well as a means of teaching meditation. His previous book, The Hidden Gift In Divorce: How to Find Hope, Healing and Spiritual Growth When Your Marriage Ends, offers help for anyone coping with the stress and sadness of divorce, while demonstrating how the experience can open a path to a happier and more peaceful life. Father to four grown children, Brown lives with his wife in Northeast Ohio. He earned a BA in English from Ohio State University, an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Cincinnati and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Kent State University.
