History

My father was born at Woodleys Melbourne in Bedfordshire. He was a garden by profession and worked for the shoe manufacturer, John White of Rushden. Because he worked on the land he was not called up during WW2, but was in the Home GUARD. He told me that when he was on duty, the person he was taking over from, would pass his rifle over as they only had one rifle. He did not like the comedy programme Dads Army because he said that it made fun of the Home GUARD and that it wasn't a laughing matter, it was very serious.
