Welcome to our second season of It’s Lit. Tune in every Sunday. Our first episode is about a bad book. Music Professor Stephan Pennington reads Atlanta Nights, a novel unlike any other, written by a group of science fiction and fantasy authors. This collaborative novel, featuring chapters by James D. Macdonald, Adam-Troy Castro, and Vera Nazarian among others, was primarily written to test PublishAmerica's claims to be a “traditional publisher” that would only accept high-quality manuscripts, this collaborative novel and push the boundaries of bad writing. This deliberately low-quality piece of work is rife with obvious grammatical errors, nonsensical passages, and a complete lack of a coherent plot. It’s both mind-warping and fun to listen to. As an avid sci-fi reader and admirer of Ursula Le Guin, Stephan came across this book while in graduate school and would take turns reading chapters with his peers.
