In episode 25 we chat with the CEO of WorkRestart, Helen Black about recidivism; what it is, how to pronounce it and most importantly why it is so important to change the current systems for people in contact with the criminal justice system. Recidivism or reoffending, creates a ripple effect that negatively impacts individuals, their families and their communities. Almost half of the people released from prison in Australia will return to prison within two years, and sadly that percentage only gets higher as years go on. If you are one of our many international listeners you may be shocked to learn that the UK for instance has a 75% recidivism rate within nine years of being released and the US sits at a staggering 83%, showing just how important it is to change the current systems in order to address these trends and give people a chance at a better future while also reducing the impacts of crime for the wider community. Providing meaningful and enriching experiences for incarcerated people can help them identify their potential. Real change lies in establishing connections to social enterprises and businesses that can provide ‘next day out’ employment opportunities & harnessing the potential of ‘double impact’ by establishing enterprises that serve communities in diverse areas of need.
