Have a clearly defined project or goal in mind. Explore crowd funding kickstarter, indiegogo, etc. Read and follow all directions very carefully. Take your time with the application, no last minute rushing. Have excellent images. Attend grant-writing workshops. Read other artists' proposals, preferably winning ones, to see what good applications look like. Don't get discouraged grants and residencies can be very competitive keep applying.
