In many respects, Austin embodies the ideal man when we first encounter him. He is self-assured, smooth, and free. In contrast to the corporate Craig, he opens up a new realm for Craig, one filled with friendship, connection, and emotional openness. The problem is, Craig is not ready to adapt to this world of camaraderie. His mental health deteriorates as he observes how a man should handle the societal pressures placed on some men. While Austin initially struggles with his life changes, he eventually stabilizes and learns to manage his work promotion, behaving as a self-actualized and emotionally mature man ought to. Conversely, Craig regresses into an immature boy, seeking comfort and attempting to reclaim an earlier version of himself instead of confronting a new and evolving reality.
