In 1959, Franco marks 20 years as leader of Spain. Now, he embraces capitalism and paints himself as a moderniser. The country experiences rapid economic growth and becomes a leading holiday destination. Meanwhile, the regime tries to stamp out the embers of Republicanism wherever they still burn. Later, as he suffers ill health, Franco plans his own succession. The ailing Generalissimo headhunts and trains up a dashing young heir.
