The film "White Bird" kicks off with Julian attending a prestigious preparatory school in Manhattan, where he faces a delayed confrontation with his own insecurities. A bully tells him in the lunchroom that he’s at the “loser’s table,” which makes him feel excluded and drives his obsession with fitting in and finding a sense of “normalcy,” which he sees as being neither “mean nor nice.” During this time, his Grandmère Sara visits New York for an art exhibition and shares a significant story from 1942 in Alsace, a region that, while not officially under Nazi control, is close enough to feel the impending danger. The story revolves around fifteen-year-old Sara, a Jewish girl whose parents refuse to acknowledge the threat of persecution as the Nazi presence grows.
