Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is many firsts: (1) she is one of the first Liberians to receive a Nobel Peace Prize - she received her prize along with another one of her compatriots, Leymah Gbowee; (2) she is the first woman to serve as Head of State for Liberia; (3) she is the first INDIGENOUS Liberian to serve as Head of State for Liberia; (4) she was also the first woman to serve as Head of State of any African country - when she became president in 2006.
