China has banned the export of technology used to extract and separate rare earth metals; a move aimed at protecting its dominance in the industry. China is the world's biggest processor of rare earths, which are used in various industries, including EVs and electronics. The ban is expected to have the greatest impact on heavy rare earths, where China has a virtual monopoly on the refining process. This move comes as Western countries are trying to reduce their reliance on rare earths from China, which currently accounts for almost 90% of global refined output.
