As particles collide with gasses in our Earth’s atmosphere, they produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. Billions of tiny collisions occur in sequence and the flashes appear to dance in the sky. Green, pink, red or blue, thousands of people travel to northern Canada during the winter for a chance to witness the ribbons of neon lights as the midnight sun begins to dim. With the sky stirring above them many believe the lights are the spirits of our ancestors and loved ones telling us everything is ok, but historically they were not always believed to be calm but rather omens of death and fire.
