Part of it is the numerous grant, fellowship and residency applications that you need to make yourself aware of. A non-trivial part of it is handling the rejection that comes with not always getting the stability that you need. We're not lawyers, doctors, or engineers - we're artists! The path to success isn't obvious, but there are means to get there if you're willing to be proactive about your search for opportunities.
