The Doc is in! Podcast with Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Grant Garcia… The Olympics have finally arrived! Starting July 23rdthrough August 8th the world’s greatest athletes will compete for the ultimate glory…to be recognized as the best at their sport and represent their country while doing so. This Olympics will introduce a few new sports to their games and one of these sports is Skateboarding. Once upon a time, this sport in the ’50s was referred to as “Asphalt Surfers” and then in 1978, Alan Gelfand invented a maneuver that gave skateboarding another revolutionary jump: the “Ollie”, which counts as the greatest trick ever invented and completely revolutionized skateboarding. That was the birth of street skateboarding. Ever since then the sport grew immensely. From Skate videos and magazines in the 80’s to the rise of Extreme Games (X games) in 1995 and in 1999 the Hawk soared through the air to land the first 900 as Tony Hawk became the face of Skateboarding. Skateboarding is uber-popular today and as the popularity of this sport continues to rise, so do injuries.  Dr. Garcia discusses some of these common injuries that skateboarders sustain. Preventative measures to reduce those risks and the importance of wearing the proper equipment to avoid/reduce such injuries. Faceplants, long bone fractures, attempting tricks above your skill level, ankle and foot injuries are just a few of the things that we discuss. It’s a gnarly show and we think every skateboard fan or parent that has a child working on achieving that perfect Landing Bolt will really enjoy it. Info: Gear/Helmet certification: Skateboard helmets use the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission), and Snell safety standard certifications and are not required but are there to show evidence of the safety offered in a particular skateboard helmet.
