Arts
Welcome to another episode of Bad Ass Women from Art History. As I explain in the intro this is another ~special episode~ deviating us once again from the Art History timeline. However, I strongly feel and I'm sure you would all agree this is the best possible deviation! Why don't we know about the Harlem Renaissance? Some of us do, but most of us don't. This is a crucial point in African American history and Black culture particularly when it comes to the arts, creativity and cultural expression.Black culture has influenced, shaped and profoundly influenced the world we know today (as is consistently underrepresented and under acknowledged), in literature, music, art, fashion and beyond. A lot of which has stemmed from the Harlem Renaissance a pivotal time in Black history. So come hang out and learn something new!Reading list:Toni Morrison -- any and all of her work, but favourites include Jazz (particularly if you want to read a story based during the Harlem Rennaisance) and Sula.James Baldwin -- If Beale Street Could Talk (also made into a film!)Zora Neale HurstonMaya Angelou (duh)Richard WrightRoxanne Gay!!!Malcom XMartin Luther King JrWatch:Dear White People (movie AND Tv series)Cadillac RecordsBlacKkKlansmanPoetic JusticeIf Beale Street Could TalkMoonlightGet Out (amazing themes to unpack in this one)BamboozledPariahStraight Outta Compton
