My guest on Ep. 23 is Erica Gavel, who is currently on the national wheelchair basketball team and was a member of the Para Pan-Am team which placed atop the podium in 2019. A 3rd knee injury (2011) while playing stand up basketball led her down this new path of wheelchair basketball after multiple trusted individuals presented the possibility of her pursuing the Paralympics. As Erica mentioned in our conversation, the transition wasn’t always smooth, but this was an opportunity she had to see through. At first Erica didn’t fully believe she could make it to the Paralympics, which I’m sure many athletes can connect with. I can’t imagine how daunting of a goal that must have been, where do you even start? In order to get started on this path Erica first had to come to grips with the realization & process of letting go of old goals & setting new ones. And while new is good in many ways, it is filled with twists and turns, especially when you’re learning a new skill. Little did Erica know that this new path would see her traveling the world – finishing up her schooling at University of Alabama where she received a scholarship, followed by world championships, tournaments, and even the Paralympic games. Erica is now preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics – with hopes of getting Canada on top of the podium once again. From one para athlete to another, I am so excited to see the performance of Erica & her teammates on display on the Paralympic stage.
