Dental Slang With Dr. Christopher Phelps And Dr. Jodi Danna

Miscellaneous

We talk a lot about words on the Dental Slang Podcast, but our guest on this episode points out some very important slang we’ve all been overlooking. Dr. Wael Garine, the prosthodontics rockstar from the Seattle Study Club, surprises us with some of the non-verbal slang he’s been using. Tiny silent gestures can speak volumes - and without alarming a patient - which is one thing all of us dentists are trying to avoid. The Apple Watch made it very easy for Dr. Wael to develop non-verbal sang in the office. The team sends him texts when patients are ready or phone calls are waiting. No one has to get up or disturb a patient, and it’s given the team some quick and abbreviated slang to use. We discuss how this slang works, and what other gestures we’ve caught ourselves using to communicate with the staff when speaking out loud isn’t always an option. With our unique dental slang, it seems easy to speak metaphorically about dental treatment. But what happens when you have to explain a real treatment plan to an unresponsive patient? Dr. Wael’s experience with restorative and implant dentistry gave him many opportunities to explain different treatment options to all kinds of patients, and he shares some of those with us on this episode. He discusses which dental prosthetics he’s recommending to his patients and why emax crowns are his favorite of the bunch.  There’s more to prosthodontics than aesthetic, and Dr. Wael discusses the different tools, treatments, and technology he’s using to bring his dental practice into the 21st century. The modern dental office is always changing, and so is our slang along with it. There are different ways to evolve as a dentist, and we share the ways you can seize more opportunities to hone your dental craft and continue your own dental education.
