A small surgical technique called dilation and curettage (D&C) is performed to identify or treat uterine problems. The cervix is opened (dilated) during the treatment, and tissue from the uterine lining is scraped or suctioned out using a specialized tool. D&C can be used to treat issues including fibroids or polyps, diagnose irregular bleeding, or remove tissue following a miscarriage. The process normally takes less than an hour and is performed under either local or general anesthesia. Most women recover quickly and return to their regular activities in a few days. Following the operation, some spotting and cramping are normal.
