What does it take for a woman to get a safe abortion in India? When does the court intervene, and in whose favour? Which case of abortion is considered worthy of being granted by Medical Boards? 

In this audio documentary, Menaka Rao, an award-winning health journalist, examines abortion through the lenses of health, law and disability. Using research on court procedures and interviews with specialists and stakeholders, including women who have had or wanted an abortion, Menaka lays out the socio-legal landscape of a woman's need for a safe abortion. Judicial interventions and exceptions in abortion cases can give us insight on how the state perceives motherhood, sexuality, disability and women's health, and how a pregnant woman often needs to become a 'victim' in the eyes of law in order to exercise her right over her own body.

क्या भारत में किसी महिला के लिए गर्भपात करवा पाना एक आसान काम है? क्या महिला के पास यह अधिकार है कि वह अपनी मर्ज़ी से गर्भपात करवा सकती है? कानून गर्भपात की इजाज़त किसे देता है और किसे नहीं? हमने अमरीका और अन्य देशों में गर्भपात कानून को लेकर छिड़ी बहस पर तो बहुत ध्यान दिया है लेकिन क्या हमें अपने देश में गर्भपात की इच्छा रखने वाली महिलाओं की स्थितियों के बारे में पता है?

पत्रकार मेनका राव स्वास्थ्य के क्षेत्र में काम करती हैं. पुलित्जर से मिले ग्रांट पर काम करते हुए मेनका ने कानून, स्वास्थ्य, महिलाओं की परिस्थितियों एवं विकलांगता के नज़रिए से भारत में गर्भपात की स्थिति को समझने की कोशिश की है. अपने शोध के दौरान वे ऐसी कई महिलाओं से मिलीं जो जिन्हें गर्भपात करवाने के लिए अपमान, दुख, अकेलापन और कई तरह की अन्य कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ा. मेनका ने अपने शोध में कोर्ट के द्वारा दिए गए उन निर्णयों की भी पड़ताल की जो यह तय करते हैं कि किस महिला को गर्भपात का अधिकार है, किसे नहीं. कानून के साथ-साथ उन्होंने वकीलों, एनजीओ कार्यकर्ताओं से भी बात की जो गर्भपात के मुद्दे पर काम करते हैं. अपने काम के ज़रिए मेनका उन सामाजिक-कानूनी पहलुओं को खोलने की कोशिश करती हैं जो गर्भपात करवाने की इच्छा रखती महिला के सामने खड़े होते हैं. 

क्या हैं वे परिस्थितियां? कैसे कानून गर्भपात करवाने की इच्छा रखने वाली महिला को अच्छी और बुरी महिला के खांचे में बांटने की कोशिश करता है? राज्य की नज़र में मातृत्व, यौनिकता और महिला स्वास्थ्य का क्या महत्त्व है? वे इसे किस नज़रिए से देखता है? ऐसे कई ज़रूरी सवाल हैं जिनपर मेनका राव ने अपने इस पॉडकास्ट में खुलकर बात की है.
