Kanyakumari is a city located in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu state of India. It is the southernmost city of mainland India. From here there is the Indian Ocean in the south, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. The coast adjacent to them extends for seventy one kilometers. Along the sea stand the Thiruvalluvar statue and the Vivekananda memorial stone. Kanyakumari is also an important Hindu pilgrimage site: Kanyakumari has been under the great rulers of South India, Chola, Chera, Pandya. The imprint of these rulers is clearly visible on the monuments here. There is a mythological story behind the name of this place Kanyakumari. It is said that Lord Shiva had given a boon to the demon Banasuran that he would not be killed by anyone except a virgin girl. King Bharat, who ruled India in ancient times, had eight daughters and one son. Bharat divided his empire into nine equal parts and gave it to his children. The southern portion went to his daughter Kumari. Kumari was considered an incarnation of Shakti Devi. Kumari ruled this part of South India efficiently. Her wish was to marry Shiva. For this she used to worship him. Shiva had also agreed to the marriage and preparations for the marriage had begun. But Narada Muni wanted Banasuran to be killed at the hands of Kumari. For this reason the marriage of Shiva and Devi Kumari could not take place. Meanwhile, when Banasuran came to know about Kumari's beauty, he proposed marriage to Kumari. Kumari said that if he defeats her in the war then she will marry him. There was a war between the two and Banasuran died. This place in South India is called Kanyakumari in memory of Kumari. It is believed that the material prepared for the marriage of Shiva and Kumari later got converted into colorful sand. ..............
