The concept of the inner child was first proposed by psychologist Carl Jung when he became aware of his own childlike inner-feelings and emotions. Jung theorized that it was this part in all of us that influenced all that we do and all the decisions that we make. The denied, frustrated & unmet needs of that  inner child - for love, acceptance, protection, nurturance, understanding - remain the same even when we grow into adults. Connecting with it, acknowledging it, listening to that inner child, and integrating it into one's conscious awareness through repeated dialogue and reconciliation is what inner child therapy involves.
