"Bear in mind that everything that exists is already fraying at the edges and in transition, subject to fragmentation and to rot. Or that everything was born to die." Marcus Aurelius said that in Meditations almost two thousand years before Science officially established the second law of Thermodynamics. Both of them implied that entropy or the disorder within a system will always increase. With each energy conversion from one form to another, some of the energy becomes unavailable for further use. Turning on a light bulb shows that in addition to light, heat is generated and wasted. It is impossible to recapture that light or heat to do additional work. Hence, outside energy must be continually added to keep the system running. or to keep the light running. In other words, Over time, a system that is not taking in new energy gradually becomes less organized, less productive and less effective. We cannot eliminate disorder from the system, no matter how much we try. Everything we build, including ourselves, is constantly breaking down.
