Today's guest is OTReniX, a cybersecurity PR agency that helps infosec companies earn media coverage and manage crisis communications after a data breach. In this episode we discuss the agency's new study of 42 major cyber incidents of 2023-2026, from MGM Resorts and Okta to Change Healthcare and the Canvas attack. The findings are striking: 40 percent of breached companies understated the damage in their first statement and later had to correct the numbers upward - and those companies received hostile press coverage twice as often, 65 percent versus 32 percent. One in four companies never disclosed how many people were affected, and 83 percent opened with a vague phrase like "security incident" instead of saying what was stolen. We talk about why the media does not punish companies for being hacked but punishes them for lowballing, stalling and hiding; what Bybit, Coinbase and Qantas did right; and how data breach communications, incident response PR and a prepared crisis communication plan protect brand reputation. OTReniX provides media relations, crisis communications, analyst relations and thought leadership for cybersecurity vendors worldwide.
